Kids For a Cure

On June 5th, Newtown will once again host the Relay For Life, a community wide fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society. At the Relay, teams of people will camp out at Fairfield Hills and take turns walking around a track to raise awareness about cancer. Kids for a Cure allows children in grades K-6 to get involved with the Relay, in order to increase their knowledge about cancer prevention and empower them to make a difference.

Kids for a Cure Mini Relay

Kids for a Cure Mini Relay

Thanks for your interest in participating in the Kids for a Cure Mini-Relay on June 5th, 2009. The committee has been working hard to ensure that the Mini-Relay is a fun and meaningful experience for your children. Below are event details.

Time: 3:30 pm-5:00 pm (immediately before the Relay for Life)

Participant check-in/registration will begin at 3:15 pm at your school’s table. Opening Remarks and Recognition of Schools will begin at 3:30 pm.

What to wear: School colors and/or school t-shirts. (Remember to protect yourself from the sun by wearing a hat, sunglasses, and sun-screen.)

Activities: Cancer awareness and prevention games for students in grades K-4 will be set-up and marked with balloons.

Reed School students can participate in a fun cancer awareness and prevention scavenger hunt.

Walking the Laps: Youth can choose how many laps they walk around the track. This year's theme, "Imagine a World with More Birthdays" lends itself to a lot of fun activities during the walk. There will be three themed laps: the 1st will be a school spirit lap, mid-way there will be a fun “cool off” get wet sprinkler lap, and the last lap (4:45 pm) students will walk to Remember, Celebrate, and Fight Back against cancer. For this special lap, students can invite a cancer survivor to walk with them or carry a sign proclaiming why they Relay, which they can make at the Mini-Relay. Survivors who plan to walk this special last lap, who are not already registered, can register for free as a survivor and get a t-shirt at: www.RelayForLife.org/newtownct, click on “Sign-Up” and then click on “Register as a Survivor”.

Remember: All participants must have an adult chaperone with them during the event. Contact Mary Radatovich at: relayforlifeofnewtown@gmail.com if you have questions or if you or a high school or college student would like to volunteer at the Mini-Relay.

Together we can make a difference!

There is a $10.00 registration fee and youth participants are encouraged to raise at least $10.00 to donate to the American Cancer Society. All participants will be given a special nylon drawstring bag, which will serve as their "goody bag," in keeping with the Celebrating More Birthdays theme. The children will collect items for their bag throughout the event. All participants must have an adult chaperone with them during the event.

Pre-registration will be done through your child’s school. Watch your newsletter for more details.
